Ignatian Spirituality

St Ignatius was the author of a book called The Spiritual Exercises, literally ‘exercises’ to help people pray and to reflect on their lives. He encouraged people to give time to this through a retreat and through conversation which allowed them to get in touch with their deepest desires. Indeed the first Jesuits were called ‘friends in the Lord’ or ‘Companions of Jesus’ and today too this ministry of ‘spiritual companionship’ (also called ‘spiritual guidance’ or ‘spiritual direction’), along with retreats and prayer in various forms, is at the heart of the ‘way of St Ignatius’ or what we call ‘Ignatian spirituality’.
